Plot Summary

It is peacetime, and the no–nonsense General Kirby (Kevin McCarthy) is intent on ensuring his air command units remain in a state of combat readiness. After the General surprises the members of the 456th Wing with an emergency drill, he then shocks the troops by dismissing their beloved commander. When Colonel Jim Caldwell (Rock Hudson) is brought on to lead the group, he makes his intentions clear: from here on out, the fighting 456th is to serve as a model of efficiency and preparedness. Soon, Colonel Caldwell's relentless strivings for perfection begin to wear on the men's morale – eventually putting strains on his friendships and his marriage. It is Caldwell's British wife, Victoria (Mary Peach), who attempts to help him rediscover his compassion. Their relationship is at the center of this epic tale of duty and love in conflict. With striking attention to detail (the film was produced with the complete cooperation of the United States Air Force) and gripping visuals by the legendary Academy Award winning director Delbert Mann, A Gathering of Eagles soars with the greatest military classics in movie history.
